Situated on the banks of the River Clyde, it is
Scotland's largest city. The city streets are built on a grid system that means you can never get
too lost, and with hundreds of restaurants, bars and clubs to try out your student years will be
very busy indeed!
Glasgow is particularly good if you want
to immerse yourself in music and theatre. The RSAMD is within five minutes walk of the Glasgow
Royal Concert Hall (home of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and visited by major
international orchestras). The Theatre Royal (home of Scottish Opera and Scottish Ballet) and an 18
screen multiplex cinema are just across the road. There are 12 theatres of varying sizes in
Glasgow, including the renowned Citizens Theatre, Tron theatre, the Arches and The Theatre Royal
and it isn't hard to see why so many actors, musicians and artists choose to live and study here. A
huge volume of bands and pop groups play in Glasgow, with the majority of them citing the city as
the best audience that they have played for. With a number of venues across the city ranging from
the mighty SECC, the infamous Barrowlands and the cosy King Tuts (to name a few) the majority of
bands fit a visit to Glasgow into their tour schedule.
Glasgow is home to more than 35 museums and galleries, which include the Burrell Collection, the Hunterian, the Art Gallery & Museum at Kelvingrove, the People's Palace and theMcLellan Galleries, while the city's Mitchell Library is the largest public reference library in Europe.
As the largest UK shopping centre outside London, Glasgow has a shop for every possible taste. From the designer boutiques of Ingram Street to the high street chains of Buchanan and Argyle Street, the prestigious indoor malls and second-hand bookshops every possible whim is catered for on the streets of Glasgow.
The underground system and bus network make it easy
to get to know Glasgow. You will quickly find your way around the city centre, as its streets are
based on a grid system. The two main stations are minutes from the RSAMD; Edinburgh is only 45
minutes away by train and London around five hours by train or an hour by air. An escape from the
city to the scenic beauty of the Highlands is only an hour away.
Glasgow International Airport is just 20 minutes from the city centre and Glasgow Prestwick is within 45 minutes, offering flights to most major European cities.
