Junior Academy of Music

Music for all ages and stages

Junior Conservatoire for talented young musicians aged 9 - 18

Our Junior Conservatoire of Music is intended for those young people with a real interest in music who are between the ages of 9 and 18 years old and who show above average musical ability and potential, together with the necessary commitment and determination to study at a high level. It is appropriate for young people who may be considering a career in music as a long-term goal and for those who simply wish to pursue their interest in music. Although we take students from 9 years old, most students apply and are accepted when of secondary school age. Some students apply for their final year of school but we would normally prefer to take in students for a minimum of two years.

The Junior Conservatoire day starts at around 9.00am and the morning will include choir, a theory and musicianship class of one hour and the principal study lesson of 45 minutes. Some students are also interested in taking lessons on a subsidiary instrument and may do so provided tuition is available. These lessons are 30 minutes. Although individual lessons continue throughout the day the afternoon is mainly given over to a wide variety of orchestral and chamber music rehearsals. For some students the day will finish in the early afternoon, others will have a later finish at 5.00pm. The day can be hectic, but there’s always time to get to know people and make new friends.

Music classes for children aged 7 to 11

The Junior Conservatoire offers classes for children between the ages of 7 and 11 years old who have only recently started to play or are beginners. The children will have a 30 minute principal study lesson, a 30 minute theory, singing and musicianship class and a 30 minute rhythm-based group activity. A subsidiary study and ensemble work will be available if appropriate. Most of the lessons for this preparatory course will take place in the late morning and early afternoon. This course is only available for children up to the age of 11 years old.

Music classes for early years, aged 0 to 7

The Junior Conservatoire is delighted to be able to offer some entirely new courses aimed at children from pre - 1 year old to 7 years old. These are held on Sunday afternoon at our Renfrew Street campus.
