Jazz

As well as taking 90 minute individual lessons with specialist jazz tutors each week, students will take a wide range of creative and contextual studies such as: Jazz Ear Training, Jazz Chord Scales, Jazz Arranging, Jazz Ensembles, Music Business, Jazz History, Jazz Harmony, Jazz Improvisation, Jazz Piano, Notation, Jazz Composition, Personal Development, and Creative Production Skills.


You’ll also have the opportunity to undertake a second study, participate in masterclasses, and perform in Conservatoire concerts and events throughout all four years of study.


Year 1


Your Principal Study and Supporting Studies for year one will include: 90 minutes one-to-one weekly Principal Study Lesson, Aural Jazz Classics, Original Jazz Composition, Chord Scale Harmony, Music Business, Performance of Jazz History, Complementary Jazz Skills, participation in masterclasses and Blue Monday concerts, participation in Concerts with TSYJO, and participation in concerts for BBC Jazz House.


Jazz Recital [Original and Standard Repertoire] - approximately 20 minutes:


  • A balanced jazz programme consisting of 60% standard jazz repertoire and 40% original compositions will be presented with a small ensemble comprising of fellow first year students.
  • Any combination of instruments is permitted to form your groups from first year for each individual piece performed. The programme should contain special focus on improvisation and arranging of standard and original repertoire.
  • You must introduce each composition, unless you segue songs together, then you must introduce the suite, and you must also introduce your fellow musicians either at the end, beginning, or during the performance.
  • Full programme notes, with a list composers and musicians, must be presented one week prior to the recital.


 

Jazz Recital [Original and Standard Repertoire] - approximately 30 minutes:


  • A balanced jazz programme consisting of 60% standard jazz repertoire and 40% original compositions will be presented with a small ensemble comprising of fellow first year students.
  • Any combination of instruments is permitted to form your groups from first year for each individual piece performed. The programme should contain special focus on improvisation and arranging of standard and original repertoire.

  • A balanced jazz programme consisting of 25% standard jazz repertoire and 75% original compositions will be presented with a small ensemble comprising of fellow fourth year students.
  • Any combination of instruments is permitted to form your groups from fourth year for each individual piece performed. The programme should contain special focus on improvisation and arranging of standard and original repertoire.
  • You must introduce each composition, unless you segue songs together, then you must introduce the suite, and you must also introduce your fellow musicians either at the end, beginning, or during the performance.
