Strings
The String Department is fast developing into one of the most dynamic string
departments in the UK. The weekly 90-minute tuition on a principal instrument is backed up by
technique, orchestral repertoire and performance classes. Historical performance practice,
orchestral experience in symphony, chamber and opera orchestras take place alongside the
increasingly active Chamber Music programme with its emphasis on ensemble, communication and
individual’s rehearsal and performance skills.
There is a lively guitar department, with classes in improvisation and fretboard, as well as
lute and 19th Century guitar studies.
Masterclasses for both postgraduate and undergraduate studies have been given by many leading
performers, including Ilya Gringolts, Johannes Goritzki, Nobuko Imai, Barry Guy, Pavel Steidl and
Paul Watkins.
