Design in Performance: Set and Costume or Lighting and Sound

Monday to Friday: 9am – 5pm

This two-week course is aimed at anyone aged 17 plus who is interested in developing skills in design for performance. Participants have the option to focus on set and costume design, or light and sound design. It may be useful for anyone wishing to take these specialist skills to the next level, pursue a pathway to further training or explore a career in this field.

By the end of the course participants should have:

developed an awareness of the design process from initial idea through to production
worked with experienced industry professionals to develop and expand specialist skills
gained greater insight into how design works within the context of the performing arts
participated in a collaborative practical project culminating in a presentation

This course will be delivered by the Academy’s Design Lecturers and visiting guest specialists.

Week one will consist of practical and theoretical teaching in either set and costume design or lighting and sound design. Participants will be set mini projects throughout the week to apply this knowledge in a practical way.

The second week involves both strands of the course working together on a larger scale collaborative project. This is an opportunity for participants to practice their specialist learning and knowledge as a team in a more holistic way.

This project will culminate in a tangible outcome in the form of a presentation on the final day of the course. This may provide participants with evidence for portfolio building as well as an opportunity to present the product of the projects work to others.

The course will provide a fun, supportive and challenging environment in which all participants from beginners to advanced can explore and learn.
