The Academy has appointed an Eqality & Diversity Officer. The post-holder is responsible for implementing strategies in both Schools and in the institution as a whole on widening access and lifelong learning in accordance with the Academy's Strategic Plan and with government and SFC policies. The Academy Counsellor has responsibilities for students and applicants with disabilities. These are set out in " Information for Disabled Students and Applicants". This publication includes other useful contacts within the institution for students with disabilities. The Technical Facilities Manager is responsible for the provision of physical aids and other equipment which may be required by disabled students or members of staff. He is also responsible for making any necessary adjustments to the building to accommodate the special needs of staff and students. Access to the building as a whole and to our venues in particular for all visitors including these with a disability is kept under constant review by the Reachability Group. The process of improving access is on-going. The Academy is a member of West of Scotland Wider Access Regional Forum, and also a member of GOALS (Greater Opportunity of Access and Learning with Schools), an innovative regional project aimed at widening access to all Higher Education. We learn much from our association with these bodies. Disability issues can be raised at any time by staff or students with any of the members of staff listed above. Alternatively disability issues can also be raised in a number of forums such as MER Committees, the Student/Staff Forum, Schools' Management Committees or the Health and Safety Committee. Issues can be passed to the appropriate staff for consideration and action quickly as the network of colleagues with responsibilities in this area is small, well-integrated and effective. |

The RSAMD is a relatively new building (completed in 1987), constructed on three levels with an accessible lift servicing all floors. There is parking for disabled drivers on Hope Street, close to the ground floor entrance to the Academy which has level access leading to an automatic sliding door. The Reception Desk is fitted with an induction loop and Client Services' Staff at the desk all receive disability awareness training as part of their induction training programme. The Academy's Box Office is co-located at the Desk and is also fitted with an induction loop. Accessible toilets are located: on the first floor in the Foyer (main building), at the end of the School of Music corridor beside Room 2.37 and in the Opera School on the ground floor. All our auditoria and many teaching rooms, including our Lecture Theatre, are all fitted with induction loops. In addition, wheelchair spaces are provided in the Academy's three concert halls and two theatres. More information on the accessibility of the building is given in Information for Disabled Students and Applicants. This document will be of interest to anyone wishing to know more about the measures in place to ensure and to develop the widest possible access to the building and its facilities. Information for disabled patrons is given in our Events Brochure. Audio tapes of the brochure are available on request from the Box Office. Telephone number +44 (0)141 332 5057. The Academy's commitment to improving support for disabled people is set out in our Equal Opportunities' Statement. This is published in our Prospectus and, it is proposed, will shortly feature in most RSAMD publications. There are a number of strategies and initiatives aimed at improving support for disabled people. These are summarised in the RSAMD Equal Opportunities Policy. The key member of staff at the Academy with specific responsibility in this area is the Equality and Diveristy Office, Roz Caplin. Specific action groups are set up to deal with disability issues as necessary. In addition, a curriculum audit is being undertaken in the School of Music and the School of Drama. Progress will be reported to the Reachability Group and published in due course. The Academy is also considering measures to comply with the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) precepts on students with disabilities. For further information on the precepts go to the QAA website and click on Publications. The Academy is a member of two key bodies involved in widening access:
1. The Scottish Western Access Partnership (West). SWAP (West) and
The Access Coordinator represents the RSAMD on both groups. |
