Cabinet Secretary Launches Scottish Drama Training Network

At a Press Conference in Edinburgh today, Michael Russell, the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, launched the Scottish Drama Training Network.

In his opening remarks, Mr Russell outlined the aims and purposes of the Network and praised this as a considerable achievement of the Scottish Funding Council’s New Horizon Fund.

The Scottish Drama Training Network (SDTN) is a Scottish Funding Council (SFC) initiative designed to enhance the provision of Drama Training in Scotland by fostering cohesion in the sector across stage and screen professional practice, education and training. It will encourage collaboration between colleges and Higher Education and will work to promote appropriate routes and pathways for the needs and aspirations of learners.

With the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama as the leading partner, the SDTN will cover all aspects of practical, vocational Drama Training including: Acting, Musical Theatre, Contemporary Performance Practice, Technical Theatre Skills, Film, Television and Radio. The other founding partners of the Network are Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh Napier University and Sabhal Mor Ostaig, the Gaelic College, based on the Isle of Skye.

Although a relatively newly formed organisation, the Network has already achieved considerable success, particularly in its aim to ensure the continuation of Drama Training at the highest  levels of specialism in both the west and the east of Scotland.

The Minister also announced details of a new and successful achievement of the Network – namely the first-time collaboration between two Universities – Queen Margaret and Edinburgh Napier - with the support of the Scottish Funding Council - to reach agreement to set up a new BA (Hons) in Acting for Stage & Screen to be delivered in the capital.

This unique collaboration will ensure the maintenance of ‘full-power’ Drama Training strength at Higher Education Level across Scotland and beyond, with the established conservatoire training at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music, Drama and Dance in the west and an exciting new and complementary specialist Acting for Stage and Screen  Degree about to begin in the east.
