Classical and Contemporary Text
Throughout the 45-week programme you will undertake four modules in each of the following two
strands:
- Classical and Contemporary Text (CCT)
- Professional Practice (PP)
Classical and Contemporary Text 1
CCT1 introduces the New Writing project in collaboration with Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland.
You will meet the commissioned playwrights and present scenes from their published work. From this
activity ‘companies’ comprising of small groups of students are created and linked to a
playwright.
Approaches to Realistic acting are explored, with an emphasis on Stanislavski’s method of
Active Analysis, and are connected to relevant scene work.

Professional Practice 1
PP1 sees the introduction of voice and movement studies for both acting and directing
students. Voice teaching is based on the internationally-renowned work of Nadine George, and
movement on the teaching of the internationally renowned Ecole Jacques Lecoq.
Focusing on the technical skills being developed in voice and movement studies, the class
engages in a creative ensemble project based on text taken from a classical tragedy or myth.
During this module you start to explore options for your research area, professional placement
and professional mentor.
Classical and Contemporary Text 2
CCT2 involves a month-long residency at the Globe Theatre, London. The teaching is provided by
the Globe’s Educational team in the areas of voice, movement, acting and text analysis. You also
have the opportunity to take part in workshops and discussions with high profile actors and
directors. The residency culminates with a sharing of work on the Globe stage to which the industry
contacts are invited.
Professional Practice 2 and 3
PP2 and 3 involve workshops and talks with leading professionals, actors, directors and
agents.
Understanding of professional practice is broadened and the need for effective self promotion is emphasised. Professional placements of at least a week in duration are undertaken which are reflected upon in written summative statements.

During these modules you are allocated time for research and the development of
student-generated practical work which explores your area of interest. You have opportunities to
take part in experimental, scratch performances in public venues.
Classical and Contemporary Text 3
CCT3 focuses on Shakespeare productions which are led by professional directors, assisted by
the directing students. Preparatory work on text, contextual studies and character analysis provide
the essential grounding for the rehearsals. The productions are performed publicly in a
professional venue in Glasgow.
During this module you have ongoing script development time for the New Writing project, which works towards a reading of the first draft of the plays.
Classical and Contemporary Text 4
CCT4 comprises of the final rehearsals and performances of the plays produced in the New
Writing project in Glasgow, London and Edinburgh to an invited professional audience.
Directing students are responsible for all aspects of planning, rehearsal and production of
the plays with their acting colleagues.
Professional mentors and core staff provide support where needed, but this final module aims
to replicate the activity of a small company of emerging artists producing new material for a
public audience.
Professional Practice 4
PP4 activities happen in connection with shows and workshops at the Edinburgh Festival.
Your final research document is completed along with a personal professional development plan providing a focus and catalyst for transition into the profession.
