MA Musical Theatre (Performance or Musical Directing)

This 1-year, intensive, practical Masters is designed to train advanced performers for a professional career in Musical Theatre. The emphasis of the programme is on training imaginative actors who sing and dance creatively and we believe that live performance requires a blend of skills rooted in solid acting technique. If you are interested, you should have a degree in the arts (or equivalent performing experience), and feel excited by meeting the creative challenge of combining passion with artistry. We feel you should have something to say about musical theatre form as an expressive medium, and see yourself as a highly individual and unique interpretative artist.

The course is an intensive blend of creative opportunities. Classes will focus on acting, singing, and dance in an environment that seeks always to combine theory with practice. The course integrates technique classes with intensive collaborative workshops while also allowing flexibility for students to focus in on areas of particular need or interest. Performance opportunities include - Big Band Concert season, solo Cabaret performances, a full season of work at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and an Industry Showcase in Glasgow and in a West End Theatre. In addition, projects will be prepared for internal showings through company scenes, naturalist acting and choreography project where students will work and make contact with a range of industry professionals.
Along with tutorials and project work, units will include:

- Contemporary Scene study

- Style & Contextual Studies

- Jazz, Contemporary and Ballet dance

- Portfolio Preparation

- The Entrepreneurial Artist

- Individual Elective study

- Nadine George Voice work

In a rapidly changing industry we recognise the importance of staying closely linked to industry. Students have recently enjoyed sessions with David Grindrod (David Grindrod Casting Associates) Simon Beck (Musical Director – Spamelot, Legally Blonde) James Brining (Artistic Director, Dundee Rep); Robert Scott (Musical Supervisor - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) Pete Woollard (AMD – Wicked) Hilary Brooks ( Freelance MD) Jonathan Gill (MD – The Sound of Music). And of course, our President, Sir Cameron Mackintosh, takes a keen interest in our progress.

Past graduates are currently appearing in the West End, Broadway, Regional Theatres, National and International Tours and for the for many National Theatres including the National Theatre of  Scotland and Scottish Opera.

We believe that the success of the course depends on both a high degree of contact and of small group sizes. This will ensure that every student is given adequate time and attention in order to develop fully within a 12-month time limit.
