James is an Oboe and Cor Anglais tutor at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

James began the oboe at 14 years of age.  In his formative years he won scholarships to Chethams School of Music; the Royal Academy of Music, and the prestigious German Government Scholarship (DAAD), to study at the Stattliche Hochschule fur Musik, Karlsruhe, in Germany, with renowned International Oboe Soloist, Thomas Indermuhle.  He won many prizes and awards during these years, winning the Oboe Prize at both the RAM, London, and the Staatliche Hochschule fur Musik, Karlsruhe, as well as being awarded the Principal's Prize in his final year at the RAM. Having worked with many of Britain's Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, he also enjoyed a stint as Principal Oboe with Orquestra do Norte, Portugal, before becoming Solo Principal Cor Anglais with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in 1998.   For the last ten years he has been an Oboe Tutor at the RSAMD, and also gives regular classes there in the Art of Reed Making, an invaluable part of any Oboist's technique.
