Aaron Shorr BMus MMus DipRAM, ARAM
Head of Keyboard Department
Students from more than 20 countries come to the Academy to take advantage of
the courses and opportunities in the distinguished keyboard department. The Academy is fortunate to have some of the best facilities in Europe and a
dedicated team of renowned teachers. Every three years the Academy is proud to host the
Scottish International Piano Competition.
There are almost 100 pianos throughout the RSAMD. For performance and
practice, students may use the Steinway grands in the piano teaching rooms, the Steinway and Yamaha
concert grands in the large performance spaces and a mix of Yamaha, Kawai and Boston grands in the
practice rooms.
As part of our ambitious aim to be one of the top conservatoires in Europe and
the destination of choice of UK students, the Academy must replenish its studios, practice
rooms and concert venues with the highest quality new keyboard instruments.
Supporting this Academy priority would allow us to deliver our mission to be
an international centre of excellence and innovation for learning and teaching of performance,
where the student experience is paramount.

Head of Opera
The RSAMD’s Alexander Gibson Opera School opened in 1998 to house the already
successful Opera Class. It is Scotland’s first and only opera school and the purpose-built
facilities house rehearsal and coaching rooms and a stunning performance space.
With a global reputation for delivering the highest quality of training,
students from Scotland and around the world who choose to study Vocal Studies at undergraduate,
postgraduate and the prestigious Opera School level receive regular one-to-one singing lessons
alongside classes in languages, movement, drama and Alexander Technique as well as performance
classes, specialized coaching and masterclasses.
Most visibly the students participate in three full-scale opera productions
annually, at the Academy’s own New Athenaeum Theatre and at other venues across
Scotland. These productions often sell-out and are critically acclaimed.
Through having this facility in Glasgow, the RSAMD aims to support the future
of opera in Scotland and ensure that the cultural reputation of the country is held in the highest
regard around the world. There are many ways to support Opera at the Academy: come and see
some of the outstanding productions or make a donation to the Opera Fund.
