BA Acting

First Year

The first year focuses on the establishment of a sound basis in all five programme strands:

Acting
Voice
Movement
Critical and Contextual Studies
Professional Practice

Acting studies begin with an exploration of the self as acting material and the creative observation of reality as the main two routes to achieving characterisation, relationships and actions within performance.

Voice studies focus on providing a thorough grounding in theoretical and practical aspects of voice, with an emphasis on daily practice. Exploration of phonetics, accents and dialects begins, and you are introduced to the principals of vocal health.

Movement studies focus on physical fitness and the language of movement aiming to achieve a balanced and free use of the body. You also undertake classes in contemporary dance, fencing and Alexander Technique.

Critical and Contextual studies provide an introduction to theatre history and contemporary culture, exploring genres and the structure of the play. You begin developing research skills and looking at the strategies required to maintain a successful career.

Second Year

The second year is focused on development and exploration of techniques and the establishment of professional practice.

Acting studies increasingly take the form of rehearsals and preparation for performance activities and public productions. You are encouraged to pursue increasingly independent methods of analysis, reflection and personal development.

You continue to consolidate and development voice skills, enhancing technique and understanding, and exploring a variety of performance contexts. New techniques such as mime, mask, acrobatics and Commedia dell’Arte are introduced in the programme of movement and dance classes.

Career management and entrepreneurial skills are explored through a series of workshops and practical exercises. Three new strands are introduced to the programme - New Work, Acting for Media and Educational Drama for Young People – ensuring you are equipped to excel in an increasingly diverse profession.

Third Year

The third year focuses on public performance and practical interaction with the world of work. Voice and Movement studies immerse themselves in variety of performance projects and career management activities.

You are encouraged to seek professional employment throughout the year and where appropriate work is assessed in the place of its curriculum-based equivalent. Final year elective modules create the opportunity for further film or stage acting, and are designed to enable you to form small companies as a ‘bridge’ into the profession.

Professional Practice embraces a wide range of activities including individual mentorship, auditions, interviews and the final year showcase performances providing a focus and catalyst for transition into the profession.
