BA (Scottish Music) with Honours

The BA Hons (Scottish Music) and BA Hons (Scottish Music-Piping) are the world’s leading degree courses in traditional Scottish music where performers can develop their skills on their main instruments in the contexts of practical and academic studies.

Group work, singing in both Scots and Gaelic, historical and analytical studies are all integral parts of the BA courses and there are electives that enable traditional musicians to qualify for PGCE courses for secondary school music teaching. Most important of all, however, are the many varied performing opportunities. These include tours around the United Kingdom, recording and production of CDs and appearances at high-profile events, including Glasgow’s internationally famous Celtic Connections festival and frequent performances at the Scottish Parliament.

Department lecturers and teachers maintain elite worldwide status as performers, composers and scholars of Scottish traditional music and visiting artists and academics come from all over the world to work with the students.

In addition to Highland bagpipes – which includes Bagpipe Technology & Sound Production and History & Repertoire, ensemble and project work meriting the award of BA (Scottish Music-Piping) Honours – the BA (Scottish Music) Honours degree is offered with the following principal studies:

·         Accordion
·         Cello
·         Fiddle
·         Flute/Whistle
·         Gaelic Song
·         Guitar
·         Percussion
·         Piano
·         Scottish Harp (gut and/or wire-strung)
·         Scots Song

Both degrees are four-year full-time and are aimed at performers and composers of outstanding potential. The programmes are mainly practical in focus but are balanced with a strong academic element. The structure and content of both programmes are flexibly designed to allow students to develop the full range of their abilities and pursue their musical interests and aspirations to the highest level, with a view to eitherfurther specialist postgraduate study orprofessional employment as performers, teachers or other music industry and music industry related professionals.
